Johnathan Edwards
Sports have the ability to teach us lessons that aid in our well-being throughout our lives. I can recall the teams and coaches that had a major impact on my journey. Coach Jonathan Edwards has an outlook that is focused on impacting his players’ ascension under his instruction and beyond. He believed that branding is a major part of the story he wanted to tell while coaching the Lady Lancers of Legion Collegiate Academy.

Overview
High school is only a 4-year window (traditionally). The young ladies at Legion Collegiate Academy were looking to maximize their impact under the instruction Coach Edwards and his coaching staff. I was hired by the coaching staff and LGA to create a logo and subsequent assets that would stand the test of time for the current graduating class and beyond.
Recent Project
Problem
Johnathan Edwards and his coach staff need a logo that they could wear on merchandise when they became a part of the staff at Legion Collegiate Academy. Their concern was that the existing LGA logo did not speak to the goals they had in mind: creating relationships with college coaches, attending summer basketball events and acquiring local sponsorships.
Goal
Create a logo that speaks to the professional nature of the incoming LGA girl’s basketball coaching staff. The framing of the “women’s” basketball naming was intentional. Coach Edwards knew that with the recent advent of NIL, this team needed to set themselves apart in their brand image overall. The hope was that the school officials, parents and community members would see the intent put into the team and get behind the greater vision: impact the young girls’ lives for the good.
Solution
We created a wordmark consistent with the modernity, simplicity, transferability and memorability of university/ college teams. In order to assure a seamless transition, we leveraged the pre-existing color palette of the high school. After the successful implementation of the logo for usage by the coaching staff, my client decided to implement the logo team-wide and commissioned me to design merchandise (swag) assets for the team to wear on and off of the court.

Takeaways
Passion can go a long way, yet planning and strategy is undeniably crucial. I love the game of basketball so this opportunity was amazing for me. Branding has the potential to impact people in ways that are not always quantifiable. We created uniformity for the coaching staff and these young women; as well as their families. The psychological impact this seemed to have on the team still amazes me to this day.
